Bhutanese Organic Groundnut Oil (500ml)

Organic cold-pressed groundnut oil from Khamdhang, Bhutan.

Cold-Pressed Organic Groundnut Oil from the lush, terraced fields of Zobel Gewog, Pemagatshel, where altitudes range from 800 to 2400 meters and smallholder farmers cultivate the heritage groundnut that is the heart and soul of our Oil.

This is not the neutral, mass-produced peanut oil you find on supermarket shelves. It is a rich, nutty, aromatic oil with deep roasted peanut undertones and a flavor so pure it tastes like the Himalayan earth itself. We source our groundnuts from the Khamdhang and Trashi Gumba regions, working in close partnership with local farmer groups to ensure every nut is grown without chemicals or shortcuts.

Our process is simple and honest: we cold-press the whole groundnuts using traditional technology. No heat, no chemicals, no refining. The result is an unrefined, virgin oil that retains every molecule of its natural antioxidants, vitamins, and flavor compounds. It is, quite simply, groundnut oil as nature intended.

Produced by Bhutan Growers, a social enterprise founded by former teacher Chimi Wangmo, this oil is more than a cooking ingredient. It is a lifeline for rural communities. Every bottle supports sustainable farming, generates employment for over 76 youth and women in remote villages, and helps preserve Bhutan’s rich agricultural heritage.

How to enjoy this Himalayan treasure in Bangkok:

  • The Traditional Bhutanese Way: Use it as the foundation for Ezay (Bhutanese chili condiments) and for tempering spices in Ema Datshi. It is also ideal for sautéing vegetables and finishing dishes.
  • The Bangkok Twist – Stir-Fries & Curries: Its high smoke point (approx. 232°C) makes it perfect for high-heat stir-fries, curries, and deep-frying. The nutty aroma will elevate your pad thaiphad krapao, or tom yum to new heights.
  • The Modern Way: Drizzle over saladsroasted vegetables, or grilled meats as a finishing oil. It also makes an excellent base for marinadesdips, and homemade mayonnaise.
  • Straight from the Bottle: Use it as a dipping oil for crusty bread, or simply appreciate its pure, nutty flavor on a spoon.

Storage: Store in a cool, dark place. Best used within 8 months of opening. Always use clean utensils to keep every drop pure.

History of Bhutanese Organic Groundnut Oil (500ml)

Groundnut cultivation in Bhutan is a quiet but significant agricultural tradition, predominantly restricted to a few farming communities where the rich agro-ecological diversity has given rise to unique local accessions. These include varieties such as Chalipa badam, Bartshampa white badam, Yangbrangpa red badam, and Nanongpa badam—each with its own distinct seed colour and character.

Our groundnuts are grown in the Khamdhang and Trashi Gumba regions, and we work closely with farmers in Zobel Gewog, Pemagatshel. Zobel is a stunningly beautiful gewog located in the northern part of Pemagatshel Dzongkhag, with an altitude ranging from 800 to 2400 meters above sea level, covering an area of approximately 63 square kilometers. Here, peanuts are grown alongside maize, potatoes, cole crops, and cereals.

This oil is produced by Bhutan Growers, a social enterprise founded by Chimi Wangmo, a former teacher from Lhuentse Dzongkhag. After serving as a teacher for over 19 years, she retired in 2018 to give back to her community. Inspired by similar programs in Indonesia, she focused on traditionally grown oilseed crops like perilla, mustard, groundnuts, and hazelnuts, through cold-press technology.

Since 2022, Bhutan Growers has worked closely with farmers, farmer groups, and commercial growers across the country to grow and produce oilseeds. The company’s mission is clear: to create a sustainable and profitable business while improving the lives of farmers. Any unit of oil seeds they sell ensures economic returns, which in turn enables rural farmers to improve their living standards. The company has also been able to generate employment for over 76 youth and women in the villages where they work.

When you cook with this oil, you are tasting a story of community empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and a former teacher’s dream to give back.

How to make Bhutanese Organic Groundnut Oil (500ml)?

Here are three delicious ways to bring the flavor of Bhutan’s eastern Himalayas into your kitchen:

  1. The Classic Bhutanese Temper (Phagsha Paa – Pork with Red Chilies): This is a traditional Bhutanese dish where groundnut oil shines. Heat 2 tablespoons of Bhutanese Organic Groundnut Oil in a wok or heavy-bottomed pan. Add sliced pork belly and fry until golden and crispy. Remove the pork, then in the same oil, sauté sliced onions, garlic, ginger, and a generous amount of dried red chilies (or fresh green chilies for milder heat) until fragrant. Return the pork to the pan, add a splash of water, and simmer until the meat is tender and the sauce has thickened. The groundnut oil’s nutty depth beautifully complements the spicy, savory flavors of this classic dish. Serve with Bhutanese red rice.
  2. The “Gross National Happiness” Stir-Fry (Kewa Datshi-inspired): This is a Bhutanese take on a quick vegetable stir-fry. Heat 2 tablespoons of Bhutanese Organic Groundnut Oil in a wok over high heat. Add sliced potatoes (kewa) and stir-fry until golden and crispy. Add sliced onions, bell peppers, and green beans. Continue stir-frying for 2-3 minutes. In a small bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of groundnut oil1 tablespoon of soy sauce1 teaspoon of chili paste (ezay) , and 1 teaspoon of honey. Pour the sauce over the vegetables and toss to coat. Serve immediately with steamed rice. The high smoke point of groundnut oil makes it perfect for this high-heat cooking method, while its nutty flavor enhances the vegetables.
  3. Bhutanese Peanut Dressing for Som Tam (Green Papaya Salad): This is a delicious fusion of Bhutanese and Thai flavors. In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons of Bhutanese Organic Groundnut Oil2 tablespoons of lime juice1 tablespoon of fish sauce (or soy sauce for vegetarian) , 1 tablespoon of palm sugar (or honey) , 1 clove of minced garlic, and 1-2 finely chopped bird’s eye chilies (to taste) . Drizzle over a freshly made som tam (green papaya salad) , or use as a dressing for any crunchy salad. The groundnut oil’s rich, nutty profile adds an incredible depth to the bright, spicy, sour flavors of the salad.
