Bhutanese Organic Peanut Spread

Pure roasted peanut butter from Zobel Gewog. No added sugar or preservatives.

In the Eastern agricultural heart of Zobel Gewog, Pemagatshel, where the altitude ranges from 800 to 2400 meters, farmers have been cultivating Bhutanese groundnuts. These small but mighty kernels are the soul of our Organic Peanut Spread.

This is peanut butter reimagined through a Bhutanese lens. We take locally grown groundnuts from the Andhang Gewog region of Trashi Yangtse, then slow-roast them to unlock their deep, earthy sweetness. We grind them into a luxuriously creamy spread, blended only with local cold-pressed groundnut oil, a gentle drizzle of wildflower honey, and a whisper of Himalayan pink salt.

What you won’t find? No added sugars. No hydrogenated oils. No preservatives. No weird stuff. Just pure, simple ingredients that taste like the Himalayan earth that nourished them.

How to enjoy this Himalayan treasure in Bangkok:

  • The Classic Way: Smear generously on warm toast, drizzle over oatmeal, or swirl into your morning yogurt. The natural sweetness from the honey means you don’t need any extra sugar.
  • The Bangkok Twist – Spicy Satay Dip: Whisk 2 tablespoons of the peanut spread with 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 teaspoon of lime juice, a splash of coconut milk, and a pinch of chili flakes. Serve alongside satay skewersgrilled chicken, or fresh spring rolls.
  • The Modern Way: Use as a base for creamy noodle sauces, blend into smoothies (it’s incredible with banana and a dash of cinnamon), or spread on apple slices for a healthy snack.
  • Straight from the Jar: Let’s be honest – sometimes a spoon is all you need.

Net Weight: 350g. Best before 6 months.

History of Bhutanese Organic Peanut Spread

Groundnut cultivation in Bhutan is a quiet but significant agricultural tradition, predominantly restricted to a few farming communities where the rich agro-ecological diversity has given rise to unique local accessions. These include varieties such as Chalipa badam, Bartshampa white badam, Yangbrangpa red badam, and Nanongpa badam, each with its own distinct seed colour and character.

Our groundnuts are sourced from the Andhang Gewog region of Trashi Yangtse in eastern Bhutan, an area known for its agricultural focus. The government has invested in land development projects in Trashi Yangtse, making agricultural fields more accessible to farm machinery and improving crop yields. Peanuts are a key cash crop in the region, particularly in Khamdang and Toedtsho Gewog, where they are grown as a crunchy, flavourful snack.

This spread is produced by Bhutan Growers, a social enterprise founded by Chimi Wangmo, a former teacher from Lhuentse Dzongkhag. After retiring from 19 years of teaching, she returned to her community to create value-added farm products. Inspired by similar programs in Indonesia, she focused on traditionally grown oil seeds such as perilla, mustard, and groundnuts – crops that were already climate-resilient and easy for farmers to adopt.

Since 2022, Bhutan Growers has worked closely with farmers, farmer groups, and commercial growers across the country to grow and produce oilseeds, using cold-press technology to retain natural flavors and nutrients. Their mission is clear: to create a sustainable and profitable business while improving the lives of farmers. Any unit of oil seeds they sell ensures economic returns, enabling rural farmers to improve their living standards.

So when you open this jar, you’re not just tasting peanut butter. You’re tasting a story of community empowerment, sustainable agriculture, and a former teacher’s dream to give back.

How to make Bhutanese Organic Peanut Spread?

Here are three delicious ways to incorporate this Bhutanese peanut spread into your cooking:

  1. Bhutanese Satay Noodle Bowl: Whisk together 3 tablespoons of the Peanut Spread, 2 tablespoons of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of lime juice, 1 teaspoon of chili oil (or Bhutanese ezay), and enough warm water to thin to a pourable sauce. Toss with cooked rice noodles, shredded carrots, cucumber ribbons, and fresh herbs (coriander and mint). Top with crushed roasted peanuts and a squeeze of extra lime. This is a creamy, nutty, spicy bowl of comfort.

  2. Peanut & Honey Glazed Tofu (Kewa Doen): In a bowl, mix 2 tablespoons of Peanut Spread, 1 tablespoon of local wildflower honey, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, and a pinch of chili flakes. Cut firm tofu into cubes and toss in the glaze. Bake at 180°C (350°F) for 15-20 minutes, or pan-fry until caramelized and crispy. Serve over Bhutanese red rice or steamed jasmine rice with a side of stir-fried greens.

  3. The “Gross National Happiness” Smoothie: In a blender, combine 1 ripe banana, 1 tablespoon of Peanut Spread, ½ cup of milk (or coconut milk), ¼ cup of rolled oats, a drizzle of honey, and a handful of ice. Blend until creamy. This smoothie is packed with protein, healthy fats, and natural energy – the perfect way to start a day filled with happiness.
