Deleg Bhutanese Herbal Incense Sticks

Twenty-three aromatic Himalayan herbs hand-rolled into incense sticks by Deleg Incense Production of Thimphu, for ritual and meditation.

Deleg Bhutanese Herbal Incense

This is traditional Himalayan incense at its most complete. Each stick is a hand-rolled blend of twenty-three aromatic substances gathered from the forests, meadows, and spice gardens of Bhutan: juniper, jatamansi, cinnamon, clove, red and white sandalwood, cardamom, agarwood, and many other medicinal Himalayan herbs. Made by Deleg Incense Production in Thimphu, the blend is grounded in centuries-old monastic recipes and is burned in dzongs, monasteries, and family altars across Bhutan.

The smoke is dense, fragrant, and deeply resinous, with layers of pine-juniper, warm spice, and soft sandalwood. It is not the sharp, perfumed smoke of synthetic incense; it is the layered, contemplative smoke of an altar.

How to enjoy this Himalayan incense in Bangkok:

  • The Ritual Way: Light the tip of the stick, let it catch flame, then blow it out so it smoulders with a glowing ember. Place it in a heat-proof holder and allow the smoke to fill the room.
  • The Meditation Way: Burn a single stick at the start of meditation, yoga, or quiet reading. The fragrance helps anchor the mind.
  • The Bhutanese Way: In Bhutanese homes and monasteries, incense is burned to clear negative energy, bring good fortune, and honour the local deities and protective spirits.

Each bundle of Deleg incense reflects the care of a small family workshop. The aromatic ingredients are gathered, dried, and ground by hand; the incense paste is mixed in small batches according to a family recipe; the sticks are rolled by hand and dried in the mountain air before being bundled for sale. The result is a product of patience as much as of fragrance.

History of Deleg Bhutanese Herbal Incense Sticks

The burning of incense has been part of Bhutanese religious and domestic life for as long as anyone can remember. In dzongs and monasteries, fragrant smoke is an offering to the buddhas, bodhisattvas, and protective deities (tshen). In family homes, it clears the air of negative influences, honours visiting guests, and marks the rhythm of the day: morning prayers, afternoon tea, evening meditation.

Bhutanese incense is distinguished from Tibetan and Indian incense by its emphasis on the highland botanical palette: juniper from the alpine forests, rhododendron and cypress from the midlands, cardamom and cinnamon from the southern valleys, and sandalwood and agarwood traded across the Himalayas for centuries. The recipes for combining these materials are passed from master incense maker to apprentice, and many families have kept their formulas for generations.

Deleg Incense Production, based in Thimphu, is one of the country’s small but respected incense houses. Its twenty-three-ingredient blend is rooted in the classical monastic formulations and is burned in homes, temples, and retreat centres across Bhutan. Buying Deleg incense is a way to support a small Bhutanese craft house and to keep the ancient art of Himalayan incense-making alive.

How to make Deleg Bhutanese Herbal Incense Sticks?

Burning incense is a small ritual in itself. Set aside a few quiet moments.

  1. Choose a Holder: Place a heat-proof incense holder on a stable, non-flammable surface. A ceramic, wooden, or brass holder works well.
  2. Light the Stick: Hold the tip of the stick over a candle or lighter flame. Let it catch fire and burn for 5–10 seconds.
  3. Extinguish the Flame: Gently blow out the flame, leaving the tip glowing with a red ember. The stick should smoulder gently, releasing a thin stream of fragrant smoke.
  4. Burn Safely: Allow the stick to burn down fully in the holder. Never leave burning incense unattended. Keep away from draughts, flammable materials, and out of reach of children and pets.
  5. Ventilate: Burn incense in a room with gentle airflow. Avoid very small, sealed rooms.

Storage: Keep unused sticks in a cool, dry place, ideally in their original packaging. Properly stored, they will keep their fragrance for years.
