History of Bhutanese Organic Hazelnut Oil (500ml)

In 2009, a visionary social enterprise called Mountain Hazelnuts planted an audacious idea: to transform Bhutan into a world-class producer of hazelnuts.

Hazelnuts had never been cultivated commercially in Bhutan before and yet the country’s clean air, nutrient-rich soils, and pristine water proved to be a perfect match for this temperate nut. Situated at altitudes above 1,600 meters in the Himalayan highlands, Bhutan’s orchards defied conventional wisdom, becoming the highest-altitude hazelnut orchards on Earth.

The early years were not without challenges. Farmers in the remote east, who had never even seen a hazelnut, were the first to plant the free saplings by the thousands. Early setbacks included stubborn species and delayed harvests which tested resolve. But today, the vision is a reality: more than 8,000 families across 19 of Bhutan’s 20 districts tend to orchards that yielded over 10 tonnes of nuts last year. The company’s nursery alone houses almost a million saplings, making it one of the world’s largest.

This hazelnut oil is a collaboration between Mountain Hazelnuts and Bhutan Growers which is a value-added partnership that transforms the precious nuts into a cold-pressed gourmet oil. Every bottle represents not just an exceptional culinary ingredient, but a commitment to sustainable agroforestry, reforestation of degraded mountain slopes, and economic empowerment for thousands of rural families. It is a true taste of Bhutan’s philosophy of Gross National Happiness, where economic development, environmental stewardship, and cultural preservation walk hand in hand.

How to make Bhutanese Organic Hazelnut Oil (500ml)?

Here are three delicious ways to bring Bhutan’s Himalayan hazelnut oil into your kitchen:

  1. Bhutanese Hazelnut Vinaigrette for Red Rice Salad: In a small bowl, whisk together 3 tablespoons of Bhutanese Organic Hazelnut Oil1 tablespoon of lime juice (or white wine vinegar), 1 teaspoon of local wildflower honey1 small clove of minced garlic, and a pinch of Himalayan pink salt until emulsified. Toss with cooked and cooled Bhutanese red rice, chopped cucumber, cherry tomatoes, fresh coriander, and crumbled Zoethey (fermented yak cheese) if desired. The nutty, sweet, and tangy dressing elevates the earthy red rice into a vibrant, nutrient-packed salad.
  2. Himalayan Hazelnut & Dark Chocolate Brownies: Substitute the vegetable oil in your favorite brownie recipe with an equal amount of Bhutanese Organic Hazelnut Oil. The oil’s delicate, nutty sweetness enhances the chocolate, creating an impossibly moist, deeply flavorful brownie with a subtle Himalayan twist. Top with crushed roasted hazelnuts before baking for extra crunch.
  3. Spicy Hazelnut Drizzle for Grilled Meats or Tofu: In a small pan, gently warm 2 tablespoons of Bhutanese Organic Hazelnut Oil over low heat (do not overheat). Stir in 1 teaspoon of Bhutanese ezay (chili paste) , 1 teaspoon of soy sauce, and ½ teaspoon of honey. Drizzle immediately over grilled chicken, pork skewers, or crispy tofu. The nutty oil balances the heat of the ezay, creating a rich, savory glaze with a gentle kick – a perfect fusion of Bhutanese flavors.
